Asphalt and paving contractors are the reason we can get from point A to point B. From driveways to highways, parking lots to tarmacs, they provide critical support for our infrastructure.
In this article, we’ll take a look at the asphalt and paving industry, along with the top trade contractors in this sector. Plus, we’ll explain what growing asphalt and paving contractors can learn from their more seasoned counterparts.
The Asphalt and Paving Industry Overview and Outlook
Paving contractors lay asphalt, concrete, or occasionally other materials on roads, parking lots, runways, and more. Common projects include:
- New roadways, driveways, and parking lots
- Curbs and sidewalks
- Repairs, resurfacing, and sealcoating
- Pavement marking
- Preventive maintenance
The paving industry generated just over $23 billion in 2023, according to IBIS World. That was a slight decline of 1.8% from the previous year. The sector comprises nearly 125,000 contractors, a workforce that’s seen a 1% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the last five years. For comparison, that’s roughly half the size of the commercial painting market and only a quarter of the growth so it’s far from the biggest sector in construction.
There’s little market share concentration for commercial pavers, with the biggest asphalt and paving contractor—the Rabine Group—owning less than 2% of the total market. Competition is thickest in Florida, California, and Texas, with over 12,000, 11,000, and 9,000 paving contractors respectively.
Top 40 Asphalt and Paving Contractors
Normally, we look to ENR’s Top 600 Specialty Contractors list to understand who’s who in each trade. Surprisingly, ENR doesn’t publish a list of asphalt and paving contractors. So we went out in search of the best. We combed through numerous industry lists, including:
- For Construction Pros’ annual Top 50 Paving Contractors of 2024
- GC Magazine’s Best Paving Contractors in the US
- Boom & Bucket’s Best Asphalt Paving Companies in the USA
Then, we distilled our research down to 40 top asphalt and paving contractors who have all been around for at least 10 years.
7 Longest-Standing Paving Contractors
While all the contractors on this list have been around for a minimum of a decade, a handful span 50 years or more. Considering that less than five percent of contractors make it to the 10-year mark, that’s an impressive feat.

What Up-and-Coming Trade Contractors Can Learn from These Leaders
Each of these seven contractors came from humble beginnings, and each of them has managed to create a lasting legacy. How is that possible in an industry wrought with cash flow problems and diminishing profits?
From what we can tell, there are some commonalities likely responsible for their long-term success.
- Focused services and sectors: None of these top asphalt and paving contractors are trying to be all things to all customers. Most of them only offer two or three core service lines and stick to a handful of sectors in a few regional areas.
- Reputation as a top priority: By and large, these contractors care deeply about their reputations. They're committed to excellence and it shows in the way their customers talk about them.
- Smart financial practices: Any construction business that achieves long-term has to nail this one. Smart trade contractors get proactive about their finances from the beginning. They prioritize working with GCs that pay on time, get strategic about A/R, and use AIA billing best practices to get paid faster.
Subcontractors across all trades have used Siteline’s construction billing software to invoice over $2 billion across 10,000+ projects—all while getting paid three weeks faster on average.
